What we offer

Diagnostic Assessments

We offer neuropsychological assessments for diagnostic purposes, to assist private clients and referring government bodies such as Department of Health, Department of Communities etc. We aim to provide comprehensive psychological and adaptive assessment that goes beyond diagnosis to help increase understanding.

Medicolegal Assessments

We offer independent, objective medicolegal assessments for a range of client legal firms. This includes compensation claims such as motor vehicle injury, workplace injury or other forensic purposes.

Please note: We do not accept assessments for Family Court matters.

Educational Assessments

We can provide assessments of learning strengths and weaknesses, and identify relevant diagnostic factors to assist school-aged children and adolescents to get the most out of their education, including any required accommodations.

We see clients aged 6-65

We provide neuropsychological assessments for all clients between the ages of 6 and 65 years and will adjust our assessment approach for the needs of these diverse client groups.

Evidence-based Practice

At True Bearing Neuropsychology we value evidence-based practice and adhere to the latest scientific evidence to support our assessment methods, formulations and recommendations. We believe it is important to always act as a scientist-practitioner, which means always being ready to learn and adapt practice over time and strive to achieve the best outcomes for clients.

Culturally Responsive Practice

We commit to providing culturally responsive practice in assessment including consideration of cultural factors relevant to testing, linguistic differences (including interpreters) and being mindful of cultural bias within our tests and systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

We usually offer an initial consultation session (50 minutes) prior to a full assessment to give clients/carers an opportunity to ask any questions, explore the right assessment direction and make sure everyone knows what to expect and what they can get out of it. Many questions you might have can be answered in this session prior to committing to a full assessment.

Below are some commonly asked questions but feel free to contact us if you have a specific question.

Neuropsychology is the study of the intersection between neurology and psychology, with a focus on the cognitive functions that your brain uses every day, such as intelligence, memory, attention and executive functions.

Neuropsychologists are highly trained experts in brain-behaviour relationships and consider a holistic approach to their client's functioning. They carefully consider the interplay of biology, psychology and social/contextual factors when interpreting test results and client presentation.

At this time we are not currently offering psychotherapy services at True Bearing Neuropsychology such as for depression and anxiety. We do offer a limited number of follow-up sessions after an assessment to help adjust to a diagnosis/non-diagnosis and help to move forward.

If you are looking for a therapist, please consult with your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan or contact us for recommendations.

We are not currently registered as a NDIS Service Provider.

If you are Self-managed or Plan-managed, some of your funding can be allocated to a neuropsychological assessment with us for the purposes of clarifying diagnosis, impairment level and/or to inform required disability supports going forward.

We also can provide diagnostic services to assist with accessing the NDIS, such as assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder or Intellectual Disability.

We currently do not offer Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) for NDIS. We can provide detailed norm-referenced assessment of a client's adaptive functioning however this does not provide the required information for day to day functioning that would flesh out a NDIS plan. We are focused on providing the diagnostic clarity and cognitive strengths and weaknesses for the client to inform their NDIS plan.

Another professional such as an Occupational Therapist would be better placed to provide detailed information about a client's day to day functional behaviours.

Many of our services can be offered by telehealth if that is your preference, with the exception of cognitive testing, which must be done in person. We use Zoom for our telehealth sessions and you will receive a link to join a meeting via email/SMS.

An assessment will include an interview to capture your relevant history and current concerns and an assessment of your cognitive abilities. We also provide breaks to give your brain a rest.

Most assessments will vary between 2 and 4 hours depending on how many tests are required or what the purpose of the assessment is.

Please set aside up to 4 hours in your calendar and bring snacks! Often assessments will finish early.

We also generally provide a feedback session on a different day to talk you through the results and recommendations.

The content and style of your report will be determined by the referral question and your clinical needs. Private clients have some choice over the level of detail that they need in their report. Our reports typically cover:

  • Relevant background history

  • Current concerns

  • Test results

  • Interpretation and formulation

  • Recommendations and helpful information

We currently do not use AI enabled tools to collect information from clients or write their reports. If AI tools are to be used, clear and express consent would first be obtained from clients prior to use.

AI tools cannot currently replicate the complex differential diagnosis offered by an experienced and highly educated neuropsychologist.

If your report is for clinical purposes such as diagnostic or educational assessment, you will receive a copy of your report following the feedback session. You are free to distribute the report as you wish for your/the client's benefit.

If the report is for medicolegal or forensic purposes, then the client will not receive a copy of the report and will need to discuss access with their legal representative.

Referrals

The requirements for Referral will depend on the nature of the service required:

  • Private client referrals can use the button to the right to self-refer using our online referral form. A GP referral is preferred to provide some context for your relevant medical history, but other reports/documents can suffice, such as from Paediatrician, Psychiatrist, Psychologist, OT or teacher.

  • Medicolegal and forensic referrals will require a Letter of Instruction.

  • Government referrals (such as Dept of Health or Communities) can use the online referral form to attach their own Referral Forms or alternatively email us directly.
